The founding meeting of the North and East Syria Student Council

Its essence is the old system, still clinging to the same values and concepts that prevailed during the Ba'ath era, without any real change in the methodology of governance or in its intellectual and political structure. This systematic approach offers no hope to society and does not represent the various components of the people—sects, ethnicities, religions, and nationalities. Syria is a country rich in its ethnic, religious, sectarian, and linguistic diversity, and true national unity cannot be achieved under a regime that does not acknowledge this diversity. An administration that does not represent all segments of society and does not believe in participation and pluralism will not be able to achieve any real progress. If this administration does not change its exclusionary mindset, then the will of the people will inevitably impose change. On this basis, we—the students of the 21st century, the bearers of will and thought—embrace the philosophy of the "Brotherhood of Peoples" and strive to play our role in building a society that reflects all its components. From here, we direct this statement to our community: 1. Arising from our deep belief in the pivotal role of students in building and advancing society, we, the students of the universities of North and East Syria, announce the establishment of the Student Council, which is based on the foundations of organization, will, and work as the core principles of any successful societal project. Through this council, we aim to fulfill our philosophical, academic, and societal aspirations and to actively contribute to building a freer and more just future. 2. Our country has witnessed a great revolution, the cost of which was dearly paid with the blood of martyrs and the suffering of the people—sacrifices we will never forget. Therefore, we as students pledge to ourselves and our community to live up to this historical responsibility, to safeguard the achievements of the revolution, protect the resources of our society, and contribute to building a democratic nation governed by law, equality, and social justice. We will be active in consolidating the values of true democracy. 3. In all international forums and academic and intellectual settings, we will represent ourselves and our philosophy with determination and capability. We will work to support and empower students wherever they are—whether in our regions or anywhere in the world—carrying the message of freedom, knowledge, cooperation, and our responsibility in spreading awareness and organization. 4. We reject all forms of discrimination and racism and will stand firmly against any policies or practices that target the youth or attempt to undermine their energy and will. In the 21st century, we will struggle with free thought, science, media freedom, and modern technology to be people of principle and stance, working to address the negatives and organize ourselves and our society side by side. 5. We, the students of the universities of the North and East Syria Region, affirm the importance of maintaining communication and friendship with all students in Syria. We will build student unity on this basis. Likewise, as is evident at this stage in the universities of Syria, we will never accept any authoritarian or anti-democratic attacks or interventions against students, and we will take a clear stance against such interventions. The Student Council in the Universities of the North and East Syria Region Date: 03/05/2025 Context: The founding of this council—the first of its kind in the region—represents the culmination of an educational journey that began in 2015, marked by the establishment of universities that reflect the diversity of society and the adoption of the Kurdish language in higher education, within a democratic academic project that embodies the values of coexistence and participation.
